Development of the Post:
There have been several mentions across the local blogosphere about the bike lanes appearing out of nowhere during the completion recently of certain road construction projects. The most notable are on Sherman Boulevard along the entrance to Franke Park and the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo by Stephen Parker @ Around Fort Wayne and Robert Enders @ Libertarian Party of Allen County also noted recently there are two that are going to be added on Rudisill Boulevard on the City's south side.
I of course had an answer for Stephen. On his original post I began unveiling the hidden projects that are going on as well as promising him this post which will try to open up the intertwined local controversies over open government and what is in my opinion a misuse in some circumstances of public monies/tax payer dollars involved in those controversies.
What started my research was two fold.
The first is quite simple in fact: F6 has a LINKS PAGE full of national and local resources or GLBT information. One of the local links and themes sections of F6, as most of my readers know is, SUPPORT 3 RIVERS ATHLETICS. While I was developing that list I ended up developing another over the course of of months after my reporting and commentary for a previous articles regarding OPRAH'S BIG GIVE and a matching five hundred thousand dollar matching donation by Mayor Tom Henry of Public Works Department dollars toward the project which was already funded by private donations. After awhile the links sections were just too long and detailed to not deserve a post of its own.
The second is a little more political than the first. One of the platform issues that Robert Fuller lobbied, in his unsuccessful bid last year for City Council's 5th District, is the fact that there is no connecting paths to the south and east sides of town for children or residents as a whole to access the bike trail system and parks around Fort Wayne without being put in serious danger by crossing major four lane highways with no crosswalks or other safety features in place that we on the north and west sides of town take for granted. The Libertarian Party of Allen County has taken up that issue as a whole now, and is working to develop a plan to eliminate this over site beginning in 2009.
